Paula Jackman’s Jazz Masters is a 6 piece band playing Jazz from early New Orleans to the British Trad Revival. Its name came into existence as a tribute to Paula’s late husband, and superbly talented banjoist, Brian Masters.
The band members enjoy their music and each other’s company resulting in an entertaining performance for all concerned. They recently spent some time in the Czech Republic playing at several venues including the Pilsen Jazz Festival.
‘Magic’ Mike Henry was Chris Barber’s last cornet player having played alongside Pat Halcox for many years. He is a superb musician who attended the Guildhall School of Music and played from a very young age with renowned brass bands.
Alistair Allan started to learn trombone at school He has worked with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra and was a regular member of Keith Nichols’ ensembles. He now runs the Midnight Follies Orchestra in Keith’s memory.
Paula started to play the clarinet when I was 9 years old and heard her first jazz band 5 years later. For many years she fitted her music alongside a career as a headteacher and Ofsted inspector but, thankfully, can now concentrate on her love of jazz full-time. She plays regularly with Hugh Crozier’s Incomparables, Hershey’s Hotshots, The Big Easy 5 as well as guesting with other bands whenever there’s a gap in her diary! Hugh Crozier, is the finest exponent of piano playing in the style of Jelly Roll Morton, you could wish to hear. Hugh played for many years with Steve Lane, Bill Brunskill and Bob Kerr. He also loves the music of Fats Domino so offers a breadth of styles to the band.
‘Lord’ Marc Easener is Britain’s finest sousaphone player. He plays all styles of music and works 8 days a week! We are privileged to have him in our band as he offers a versatility of which many brass players could only dream.
Graham Collicott has played with almost every 1920s/30s band you could care to mention. He now plays with Harry Strutters Hot Dance Orchestra as well as many other jazz bands. He drives the band with his range of percussion.
